![]() "It is a great pity to burn that," he would whisper and then he would lay the book aside for his own reading. He would turn the leaves lovingly and look slyly at the pictures. ![]() Often the curate would find a volume over which he would linger for some time. "Then we will carry them around into the back yard and burn them where the smoke will not annoy anybody." "Throw them out of the window into the garden," said the housekeeper. "Perhaps there are some that do not deserve to be burned." ![]() Then he asked the barber to hand him the books one by one, while he opened them and examined the title-pages. The curate smiled and did as she desired. Some unseen sorcerer may be lurking among the books, and the water will drive him out." "Here, doctor," she said, "take this and sprinkle every nook and cranny in the room. She ran out and soon came back with a sprinkling can full of water. There, ranged neatly on shelves, they saw a hundred large volumes and a goodly number of smaller ones. They unlocked the door and went in, the housekeeper following them. "Here it is," she said "and I hope you will make clean work of it." "We have come to remove the cause of his illness," said the curate and he asked the niece to give him the key to the room where her uncle kept his books. ![]() Indeed, he did not awake until the day was more than half gone. Early the next morning the curate and the barber came again. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That’s how Tammy at Books, Bones, Buffy quickly described this book and made me immediately add it to my TBR. “A sinister, blood-soaked story steeped in myth and darkness” ![]() These monsters of Elendhaven will have their revenge on everyone who wronged the city, even if they have to burn the world to do it. His frail master sends him out on errands, twisting him with magic, crafting a plan too cruel to name, while the monster’s heart grows fonder and colder and more cunning. A thing without a name stalks the city, a thing shaped like a man, with a dark heart and long pale fingers yearning to wrap around throats. Wracked by plague, abandoned by the South, stripped of industry and left to die. The city of Elendhaven sulks on the edge of the ocean. I need to get them out my head before moving on no matter how interesting the stories I’m currently reading are.Īnyway, here’s one I read in 2019 that was pretty good. So far my reading in 2020 has been sluggish I think it’s because I’m so backed up on reviews. Here I am, finally getting these reviews out. ![]() ![]() ![]() The pacing is unusual, with Orient dispossessing himself of all his worldly assets and accomplishments at the outset. The first third of the book takes place in New York, followed by episodes on a transatlantic voyage, adventures in north Africa, a climax in Rome, and denouement back in New York. ![]() Orient’s parapsychological studies are relevant in this book, but occultism is even more to the fore. There was nothing about the goddess Urvashi in this one, but the encounter with a sheikh in Marrakesh who superintended Orient’s “expansion to the second level” was a high point of the book. I found this second volume significantly less campy than the original Doctor Orient. ![]() Owen Orient has an alliterative name, fame as a medical practitioner, a mansion in New York City, and training in esoteric sciences from Tibet. The protagonist is just sufficiently removed from Marvel Comics’ Doctor Strange to dodge trademark litigation. Raga Six is the second of Frank Lauria’s Doctor Orient novels. Hermetic Library Fellow T Polyphilus reviews Raga Six by Frank Lauria. ![]() ![]() ![]() Seriously, it was both laugh-out-loud funny and had a surprisingly giant heart at its foundation. The author has a great hand at putting those breaks in the perfect spot for the story and continuing with them to natural conclusions.Īnd I had no idea that my life needed a cultivator chicken questing around the countryside righting wrongs and becoming a hero of the people. I even loved the PoV hopping that normally breaks pace and makes me disgruntled (though I still hate villain PoV which is thankfully a very small part of the hopping). I absolutely loved this story! It's even better than the first with some great developments and more of all the things I loved. This is second in a series with themes, storylines, and character arcs that proceed from the first. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We got so so close to it at one point during Aedion’s rescue but WE.
